Donors now have the opportunity to make an apheresis donation (platelets, red cell, or plasma) at select blood drives. Here are some simple guidelines that will help you identify the best donation for your blood type.

  1. Platelets (O+, A+, B+): Platelets are essential from donors with these blood types and are often used to help cancer patients. The process takes about 2 hours.
  2. Super Reds (A-, B-, O-, O+)Also known as double red cells, Super Reds helps people having surgeries or organ transplants, or receiving treatment for trauma. People often receive transfusions during treatment for cancer and bleeding disorders. The process takes about 1 hour and 25 minutes.
  3. Plasma (AB+, AB-): AB types are the universal donors for plasma, which is often used to treat burn victims and others with serious injuries. The process takes about 1 and a half hours.
