“When my child was young, I started giving platelets — it was a guaranteed 2-hour opportunity to read without interruption! Almost like a visit to the spa!”

What Are Platelets?

Platelets are golden! They are blood cells that help control bleeding by collecting at the site of an injury and helping the blood clot. Many people need platelet transfusions for cancer treatments, traumatic injuries, organ and bone marrow transplants, open heart surgeries, and bleeding disorders.

What is the Donation Process?

Through a process called apheresis, blood is drawn from your arm to a sterile, one-use-only kit in an apheresis machine that spins the blood to remove just the platelets, returning the red cells and plasma to your arm. This process takes about seventy minutes to two hours while you read or stream movies. We appreciate your time, and your community appreciates your donation. Platelet donors must weigh at least 115 lbs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is this only offered at your Beaverton Center?

Our Beaverton Center opened at the end of 2023. We are using this incentive program to grow our donor base and help our hospital partners during the summertime when inventory struggles to keep up with demand.

Why do you need a W9 form from me?

If you earn $600 or more in gift cards you will need to receive a 1099 form for tax purposes. Therefore, you need a W9 Tax Form to participate in this program. After your screening donation results are in, a representative from Bloodworks will reach out to you with a form for you if you wish to enroll in the program.

If I’m already a donor can I participate in this program?

If you have never donated platelets before, yes. You will need to complete the form above and go through the whole blood screening process.

What does the screening donation entail?

At the screening donation you will be donating a pint of whole blood. During this short donation process we will collect a platelet count sample, assess your veins, and determine if you qualify for regular platelet donation. You will be compensated for this visit.

If I qualify for platelet donation how soon can I donate after the screening donation?

A Bloodworks representative will reach out to about your eligibility for this program as soon as the results come in (24-72 hours after screening donation). If you qualify, Platelet donations can start as soon as the following week depending on appointment availability.

Can I schedule and manage my own appointments?

Yes, after your first platelet donation you can manage your platelet appointments in the online Donor Portal.

How often can I donate platelets and earn gift cards?

You can donate up to nine times this summer, earning a gift card for each donation.

How do I get my gift card for each donation? What business is it for?

Gift cards will be sent electronically the day after your platelet donation through a service called Tango Card. You will be able to select your choice of gift card in the redemption process.

What if I do not receive my gift card the day after I donate platelets?

Email us at [email protected] and a representative will follow up with you ASAP.

What if my donation isn’t successful?

If something prevents you from having a successful donation (machine error, etc) you will still receive your digital gift card the following day. Digital gift cards are not awarded for deferrals.

What are my platelets used for?

Platelets are used to help local patients in  Pacific Northwest hospitals that may be undergoing various treatments. Platelets are most used in cancer treatments, heart transplants, trauma situations, and bleeding disorders.

How can I make my donation successful?

  • Eat higher calcium food before donating (like yogurt).
  • Drink extra fluids and eat a healthy meal before donating.
  • Do not take aspirin or products containing aspirin 48 hours prior to donation.
  • Show up a few minutes early.
  • Make sure you use the restroom prior to your donation.
  • If you need to reschedule, we appreciate at least 48-72 hours’ notice so we can fill your appointment time with another donor.

What does platelet donation feel like?

Most people say they only feel a slight pinch from the needle at the start of the donation. Because of the apheresis process, your red cells are returned to your body along with an anticoagulant that may cause some lip tingling, so we offer you Tums® since calcium diminishes that effect. That’s also why we encourage donors to eat higher calcium food before donating (like yogurt). Some people say they feel refreshed after donating because of the extra fluid.

How long does it take to donate platelets?

Depending on your weight and height, an apheresis donation process will take approximately 70 minutes to two hours—the perfect amount of time to read, stream a movie, listen to music, have a conversation with the staff, or simply enjoy the quiet.

How will I feel after my platelet donation?

Most donors feel fine after donating blood or platelets, but some donors may experience an upset stomach, feel faint or dizzy, or have bruising, redness, or pain where the needle was inserted. Since your oxygen-carrying red cells are returned in the apheresis process, you should feel less tired than after a whole blood donation. Take it as an opportunity to “be kind to yourself” since you are saving patients’ lives!

How long before my body replaces donated platelets?

Because of the apheresis process, your plasma and red blood cells are returned to your body during your donation. Your platelets are the only component removed, which will take about 2 days for your body to replace.

That’s why you can donate platelets so frequently— every 7 days, up to 24 times a year!

How soon will I hear about getting scheduled for a Screening Donation?

You will hear back from us within 48-72 hours.
