Red Cell Genotyping for Single Blood Group (per antigen system)
|Also Known as (Alias)
|Red Cell Genotyping
|Red Cell (HEA) Genomics
|Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) Based
|Fetal samples can be genotyped for compatibility with mothers with non-RH isoimmunization. It can also be useful to resolve cases where the patient has an ambiguous serological typing.
|Additional Test Information
|Fetal Cell Genotyping:
Requires cultured amniocytes in two T-25 flasks grown to confluency (amniotic fluid not acceptable). We do not provide laboratory services to culture the amniocytes.Mother:
10 cc EDTA (lavender top) tube for maternal cell contamination.*Note: For shipping, the cultured cells should have media added to the flasks and sealed to avoid leakage.
|EDTA (lavender top)
Cultured amniocytes (fetal cell genotyping)
|10cc EDTA (lavender top) tube
|Minimum Volume or Pediatric volume
|Minimum Vol: 5ml
Pediatric Minimum Vol: 2ml or 4 EDTA (lavender) microtainers, each containing 0.5ml
*Note: For very difficult draws, contact the Genomics Testing Lab at Bloodworks NW at 206-689-6269 for approval of microtainers.
|5-10cc EDTA (lavender top) tube
If analysis of cultured amniocyte is requested, EDTA must also be drawn on mother of fetus. Two T-25 flasks of cells cultured to confluency will be accepted. Bloodworks Northwest does not have facilities to culture amniocytes.
|Whole blood cultured amniocytes are shipped at ambient temperature and should arrive in the lab within 24 hours.
Note*Cultured amniocytes arriving after 1pm on Friday will not be acceptable.

|Limitation of test
|Molecular testing to predict the red blood cell phenotype does not always reflect the phenotypic expression of the blood group antigen. This may occur in cases where the individual has genetic variation that silences or alters the blood group antigen expression that is not included in the target region of the test, and also may occur with RhD zygosity testing. Test results must be interpreted with knowledge of how known polymorphisms affect blood group antigen expression. The performance characteristics have been established by Bloodworks Northwest. The results are not intended as the sole means for clinical diagnosis for donor or patient management decisions.
